Because we've seen so much from Firestar's point of view, and he really is rather heroic, I thought he’d walk off with nearly everybody’s vote. But Bluestar and Tigerstar were early leaders in the election, and then Crookedstar enjoyed a surge in popularity that sent him through to the very last stage of voting. It's been great to see how much support there is for other leaders in the history of the Clans. They all have virtues and strengths of their own; after all, they need StarClan's blessing to receive their nine lives, so ambition alone isn't enough to secure their place at the top. Huge Thank You Purrs to everyone who got involved with this year's Warriors Election. We hope you enjoyed the online stickers and greetings cards to help promote your choice of Ultimate Leader, as well as the chance to make your voice heard. Every single vote is worth making, whatever you're voting for. I’ll confess: I didn’t know until I visited the Warriors Election site and checked out the totally awesome Warriors Election Glossary. This is where you can find out if you’re a partisan, or where the term “stump speech” comes from. (Clue: A lot of our cats do this already). We’ve put together a full-color file of all the information you’ll need about elections, and about how the voting process works so that the next time you turn on the TV, you’ll know exactly what the pundits are talking about! It has been so exciting to watch the early rounds of your online voting. Who would have thought Bluestar would make a shocking exit in the preliminaries? I thought Tigerstar would have fared better, too, judging by how many of you have leaped to his defense when we have discussed him at book signings. I love that you have the imagination to look past his dark deeds to see what a true and noble warrior he could have been. And now we’re down to (drumroll, please…) THE FINAL TWO! Can you guess who made it to the final? Will one of them be your choice for ULTIMATE CLAN LEADER? Okay, I won’t make you wait any longer. Congratulations to… FIRESTAR and CROOKEDSTAR! August 26th, 2008 ******************* Hi everyone, Happy August! I hope you’ve found plenty to keep you busy and entertained during the long vacation. Here in the U.K. the appalling weather has continued—Missy insisted on wearing her raincoat when I took her out this morning—but at least that means it’s not difficult to stay indoors and keep writing. Warriors: Power of Three #6: Sunrise is taking shape—brace yourselves for an extra dose of heartache in this one! We’re also thinking about Book One of The Fourth Apprentice, the brand-new Warriors series which launches next year. Can you believe there’ll be a total of TWENTY-FOUR books in the main series?! That’s sooooo many. Anyone need a new bookshelf? :) There may only be a few weeks of vacation left for most of you, but believe me when I tell you that’s a Good Thing. There’s so much going on in September that I might explode! On September 1st, all you Reading Warriors will get the chance to have your next reward: a unique glimpse into the Warriors world which has never been published before! I love writing these little snapshots, not least because they often give me new ideas for the main stories. Read carefully and watch out for echoes in future books! Could that be, electing a new president?! Being able to vote, and have a direct say in how your country is run, is a huge privilege and a great responsibility. As soon as you’re old enough to get your chance to vote, DO IT! Every voice matters, even the tiny quiet ones. Just ask Leafpool. She speaks softly, but is always heard. Hi everyone, Greenleaf is well and truly here—although sunshine has been sadly lacking in the UK, where Kate, Cherith, and Vicky have been looking hopefully up at the sky, wondering when the rain will stop. Vicky’s dog Missy refuses to set paw outside unless she’s wearing her little waterproof coat. In the Clans, the cats would be very frustrated with this weather, washing away all the scent of prey! But the sun is definitely shining where our books are concerned. Seekers Book One: The Quest Begins has been in the top ten on the New York Times bestseller list since it launched back in May, so three cheers for Tui Sutherland, the newest Erin! As always, we love hearing what you think of the new books. It seems that Seekers is proving popular with existing Warriors fans as well as brand-new readers, which is great to hear. ErinClan is big enough for everyone! Cherith has just finished the manuscript for Seekers Book Two: Great Bear Lake, and Tui is currently hard at work on Book Three (which doesn’t have a title yet). Hi everyone, Lots of dates for your diary in May 2008: First up, the launch of Seekers on May 27th! Yup, the brand-new Erin Hunter series about North American bears finally hits bookstores. Of course this means you need to head straight to the very special website dedicated to these fabulous books, www.seekerbears.com, where you’ll find a Sneak Peek of Book One: The Quest Begins, loads of information about the characters, and even how Vicky came up with the idea in the first place. Seekers presented quite a different challenge than Warriors in that what Vicky knew about North American bears to start with could have been written on a postage stamp. Now, she’s a world expert. ☺ Hmmm, maybe not, but there are great ways to do research in the twenty-first century. Put it this way, Discovery Channel is her friend! As well as meeting the bears on the Seekers website, you’ll also be able to explore their fascinating world—which has a remarkable resemblance to the Northern United States, Canada, and the North Pole. The world of the feral cats in Warriors was based loosely on an area in Southern England, called the New Forest, for the first series of six books, but once the cats moved away from the forest they entered a territory that you won’t find in any atlas. The bears in Seekers were also going to live in the “real” world, in territories where bears actually live, facing the same environmental problems with humans (“flatfaces”) impinging on their habitat. You’d think it would be easier to set a story in real places than having to make up an entirely new geographical situation, but it was a bit more complicated than we first thought. For a start, the bears at the center of the story lived a long, long way apart, so setting them on journeys which ended up at the same place meant asking them to walk for literally hundreds of miles. Luckily, all species of bears are capable of traveling long distances, helped by a mysterious and unerring sense of direction, so we didn’t have to make them do anything they wouldn’t do in real life. But a lot of the story planning was done with an atlas open at the relevant page, so we could check how far the bears would travel each day, and what kind of territory they’d be in at each stage. Like in Warriors, each Seekers book will feature identical maps of the Northern United States, Canada, and the North Pole from bear and flatface viewpoints, but covering a much greater sweep of territory! Good luck plotting the bears’ remarkable journeys as they set out to find one another in a quest that will turn out to be more important than any of them could have imagined. Other essential dates for Warriors fans: Power of Three Book Three: Outcast and Warrior's Return (the final in Graystripe’s manga trilogy) has been on sale from April 22nd. And, on May 13th (yup, today!), the paperback of Firestar's Quest goes on sale. While you're at it, check out the third and final title in Graystripe's manga trilogy: Warrior's Return. If you've read Power of Three Book One: The Sight, you'll already know that Graystripe makes it back to ThunderClan—but you won't know just how hard it was for him to follow his Clanmates to their new home by the lake. Now's your chance to ask all the questions you've been storing up over the last nineteen (gulp!) books. But remember: Vicky won't give anything away about what happens next. Not even for copious amounts of chocolate....

If you can't make it to one of the events, you'll be able to keep track of Vicky on her online diary, and find out who wins special purrs for repeat visits, extraordinary artwork, covering vast distances, or coming up with the Question of the Day. As always, your ideas for warrior names will be very gratefully received. You should start to see some of them popping up in the books from now on. Top tip for coming up with the best warrior name? Make sure that you use things that occur naturally in the cats' world, like leaves and stones. Jewels generally can't be used (except amber, which is also a color) because cats wouldn't have any experience of sapphires or rubies.
